You can have an active social life and be financially responsible. Stick to your budget and follow these be-social, but save-money tips and tricks!
Skip or Skimp on Dinner
Restaurant dinners are expensive! Consider skipping dinner and meet up with your friends afterward, or skimp on dinner by eating a small meal at home beforehand, then ordering food less expensive than an entrée, like a side salad, cup of soup, or appetizer.
You don’t have to do this for every dinner get together. Try this trick once a week and see how much money you save on eating out in a month. You may find the extra savings inspires you to skip or skimp more often.
An evening in with friends at your place (or theirs!) can save everyone quite a bit of money. Everyone can bring a finger food dish and a drink for themselves, if they so choose. You can play games (we like Catchphrase and Trivia Pursuit) and enjoy each other’s company without dealing with a noisy restaurant or bar.
Stay Mindful About Your Money
You don’t want to skip every pricey event with friends, so set up a system that will help you stay mindful about your money. Before heading out the door, set an amount that you will spend for the evening. If you’re worried you won’t stick to it, then leave your credit cards at home and carry cash-only. Also, let your friends know you want to spend less on social gatherings. They should respect your decision, and may even offer ideas on how to support your goals.
Don’t forget that spending time with the people you care about doesn’t have to cost a dime. A hike, bike ride, or enjoying the sunshine are free. Also, look into free events in your area. Many places put on free movie nights in the park during summer, or offer free museum admission on a certain day of the week.
