Certainly, these are critical topics for our financial futures, but this year we also want to share good things that are happening in the world. Simply put, it’s a beautiful thing to be reminded of the good in the world.
When Helping A Customer Leads to a College Scholarship
Evoni Williams was working her busy Saturday shift at the Waffle House. One of her customers, an elderly man, needed help cutting up his food. Without hesitation, Evoni took his plate and began cutting up his ham for him.
A patron, Laura Wolf snapped a photo of Evoni’s act of kindness and posted it to Facebook. Laura’s Facebook post read:
“I don’t know her name but I heard this elderly man tell her his hands don’t work too good. He was also on oxygen and struggling to breathe. Without hesitation, she took his plate and began cutting up his ham. This may seem small but to him, I’m sure it was huge. I’m thankful to have seen this act of kindness and caring at the start of my day while everything in this world seems so negative. If we could all be like this waitress & take time to offer a helping hand… #wafflehouse#kindness #givingback #offerlove #bekind #goodnews”
The post quickly went viral. It has been shared over 73,000 times.
In response to Evoni’s act of service, Texas Southern University presented her a $16,000 scholarship―for $4,000 each semester of her studies. Evoni is 18 years old and she said she was working to save up for college.
The city mayor’s office also offered a Proclamation creating a day just for Evoni!
“We, the mayor, and city council, by virtue of our authority vested by the city of La Marque, Texas, do hereby proclaim March 8, 2018, as Evoni Nini Williams Day. And the city of La Marque hereby encourages all citizens and business to recognize these acts of kindness[.]”

“The smallest act of kindness is worth more than the greatest intention.”
– Kahlil Gibran
Certainly, it is rare that an act of kindness is caught on camera and leads to a college scholarship. But Evoni didn’t help that man cut his food for personal gain, she did it because it was the kind thing to do. Kindness for the sake of kindness is its own reward.
“Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’“
– Martin Luther King, Jr.
